- How God Speaks to His Children: Knowers, Seers, Feelers, and Hearers
How God Speaks to His Children Today The Bible shows us that God speaks to His children in different ways. While He is not limited to one method, many believers recognize consistent patterns in how God speaks to them personally. Understanding these patterns helps us grow in discernment and confidence. Many believers ask, “How does God speak today?” or “How does God speak to His children personally?” Scripture reminds us that God still communicates with His children. But have you ever personally wondered, How does God speak to me specifically? Scripture reminds us: “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”— 1 Corinthians 12:7 God speaks in many ways. He is not limited, boxed in, or restricted to one method. He can speak however and whenever He chooses. But in walking with the Lord over the years, I’ve noticed something: while God can speak in all ways to all of us, He often speaks to each of His children in a way that feels relationally consistent. Just like in close relationships, there are unique ways we communicate — hand signals, looks, inside jokes. In the same way, many believers begin to recognize a primary way God speaks to them. While this list is not exhaustive, we can identify four common ways God speaks to His children: Knowers Seers Feelers Hearers If you’ve ever wondered how God speaks to you personally, this guide will help you recognize and discern His voice. Let’s explore each one. Knowers: When God Gives Supernatural Knowledge A “knower” receives insight from God that did not come through natural means. This aligns with what Scripture calls a message of knowledge (1 Corinthians 12). It’s an inner certainty — information revealed by the Holy Spirit that you could not have learned naturally. Biblical Examples: Peter knew Ananias and Sapphira had lied (Acts 5). Elisha knew what Gehazi had done (2 Kings 5). God sometimes drops understanding into your spirit so you can minister wisely. If you are a knower: Ask God to strengthen discernment. Stay humble. Remember the purpose is always the common good — never pride. 🎥 Watch the full devotional teaching on how God speaks through knowing here: Seers: When God Speaks Through Dreams and Visions Scripture says: “When there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams.”— Numbers 12:6 Seers receive communication through: Dreams Visions Spiritual imagery Symbolic pictures Joel also prophesied: “Your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” (Joel 2:28) For some believers, visuals are the primary language God uses. He may: Show you something in a dream Reveal imagery during prayer Use symbolic scenes to guide you If you are a seer: Pray for clarity. Write down dreams. Ask for interpretation. Test everything against Scripture. 🎥 Watch the full devotional teaching on how God speaks through seeing here: Feelers: When God Speaks Through Spiritual Peace or Urgency Scripture tells us: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…”— Colossians 3:15 For feelers, God communicates through feelings such as: Peace Heaviness Urgency Compassion Restraint Peace becomes the “referee” of the heart. If there is peace, it’s a go. If there is unrest, pause. God-led feelings: Prompt prayer Invite action Guide decisions Stir compassion But feelings must be tested against Scripture. God-led feelings will: Align with Scripture Be confirmed through wisdom Lead toward obedience and love 🎥 Watch the full two-part devotional teaching on how God speaks through feeling here: Hearers: When God Speaks Through His Voice Jesus said: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”— John 10:27 Hearers experience communication through: Internal impressions Distinct thoughts not their own The Spirit speaking within God speaking through others, such as sermons or wise counsel Occasionally, audible voice (rare but biblical) Examples: Samuel hearing the Lord (1 Samuel 3) Philip directed by the Spirit (Acts 8) For hearers, discernment becomes crucial. You learn the difference between: Your thoughts God’s voice Spiritual deception 🎥 Watch the full devotional teaching on how God speaks through hearing here: Testing the Spirits: Discernment Is Essential Scripture warns us: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”— 1 John 4:1 Even if you identify strongly with one of the four ways, you must: Test it against Scripture Seek wise counsel Look for confirmation Ensure it aligns with God’s character God’s voice: Will not contradict His Word Will not lead you into sin Will produce peace and fruit of the Spirit There is safety in many advisors (Proverbs 11:14). 🎥 Watch the full devotional teaching on the importance of discernment here: Why This Matters Identifying how God primarily speaks to you: Builds confidence Deepens relationship Strengthens discernment Encourages partnership with the Holy Spirit But remember: These ways are not for pride. They are for the common good. They are for obedience. They are for advancing God’s kingdom. God speaks. He speaks personally. He speaks relationally. He speaks consistently. Whether you are a knower, seer, feeler, or hearer — or a mix — ask God to grow your sensitivity to His voice. And above all: Test what you hear. Stay grounded in Scripture. Seek wise counsel. Follow His peace. Because His sheep know His voice — and they follow Him. Frequently Asked Questions About How God Speaks How can I know if it’s really God speaking? God’s voice will always align with Scripture. He will never contradict His Word or lead you into sin. If you believe God is speaking to you, test it against the Bible, seek wise counsel, and look for confirmation. The Holy Spirit produces peace, clarity, and fruit — not confusion, pride, or fear-driven urgency. Does God still speak today? Yes. Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit guides believers into truth (John 16:13). God still communicates with His children through His Word, through the Spirit, and sometimes through knowing, seeing, feeling, or hearing. However, all revelation must be tested and remain grounded in biblical truth. What if I don’t hear God clearly? Spiritual discernment grows over time. Like any relationship, learning how God speaks to you requires consistency, prayer, and obedience. Spend time in Scripture, quiet your heart before Him, and ask the Lord to sharpen your discernment. Can God speak in more than one way? Absolutely. While many believers may recognize a primary way God speaks to them, He is not limited. God can speak through knowing, seeing, feeling, hearing, Scripture, wise counsel, circumstances, and more. Is hearing God biblical? Yes. Throughout Scripture, God spoke through dreams, visions, inner conviction, prophecy, and His Word. However, all revelation must align with Scripture. How can I grow in hearing God’s voice? Spend consistent time in Scripture, prayer, and obedience. Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and discernment. Learning how God speaks becomes clearer as you spend consistent time in prayer and Scripture. You may find our guided Prayer Journal or Bible Study Journal helpful in strengthening your discernment. - Daily Time With God: Why It Matters and Why I Started Daily Devotional Ministries
Several years ago, I felt the Lord impress on my heart not just to read the Bible daily, but to study it more deeply . At the time, I was faithfully following daily Bible reading plans and spending time in prayer and worship each morning—but God began nudging me to go further in my walk with Him. From Reading to Daily Bible Study I would listen to a sermon or podcast and hear the same reminder: “Don’t just read the Bible—study it.” At first, I resisted. Lord, I went to seminary. Haven’t I studied enough? Lord, I’m busy and tired. I don’t have the time. Lord, isn’t simply reading my Bible enough? Has anyone ever been there? But God, in His kindness, didn’t let me shake off that prompting. Finally, I opened a journal and pen and began taking notes on the Scriptures that stood out to me. Later, I switched to an iPad (because my handwriting was unreadable 😅), but the practice remained the same: creating a habit of daily Bible study and writing down what God was teaching me. Hearing God Through His Word Day by day, I started noticing patterns in my study: A single word or phrase would leap off the page. Old Testament passages connected with New Testament readings. God revealed personal encouragement, direction, and growth through my obedience. What began as a simple step of obedience turned into years of journaling, listening, and learning at God’s feet. Those seasons shaped my faith and gave me a hunger to keep growing. From Journals to 5-Minute Daily Devotionals Years later, when God called me to start 5-Minute Daily Devotionals (5MDD) on YouTube , I realized those journals had become the foundation for teaching others. Even now, as I prepare new devotionals and podcasts, God often takes me back to those Bible study journals to encourage others today. What started as personal notes became messages of faith-based encouragement for believers all over the world. Why Daily Time With God Matters: The Birth of Daily Devotional Ministries And that’s why I started Daily Devotional Ministries . Daily time with the Lord is the foundation of our days. Whether through devotionals, Bible studies, or simply prayer and worship, we need His presence, wisdom, and guidance daily.
